FAQs...

7.30 pm Interval – opportunity to chat informally and purchase refreshments
8.00 pm Chaired, informal Q&A discussion session
8.50 pm Close and thanks

Q. Why these particular 10 remote and/or rural communities?
In April 2011, we opened up a call for interested communities and potential 'Café champions' to come forward, with the support of the Rural Gateway.

Q. Why 10 communities?
The response to the call was overwhelmingly positive. dot.rural were inundated with requests (something to bear in mind for after the pilot!). As such, we decided to change tack slightly; instead of 5 locations, 2 events in each, we are visiting 10 locations, 1 event in each. This way, dot.rural avoided disappointing interested communities.

Q. Who funds Café Connect?
Café Connect is supported by a science engagement award from the Scottish Government. This funding contributes to the travel expenses for the ten speakers and the series coordinator, supplemented by the dot.rural public engagement budget.

Q. How many people will Café Connect reach?
dot.rural are aiming to engage ~300 people over these 10 pilot sessions.

Q. How can I get involved?
Throughout the Café Connect series, you can follow dot.rural's updates:
-> Find us on Facebook
-> Follow us on Twitter
-> Blog with us

Q. Why these particular topics?
Based on 16 topics (reflecting dot.rural's research), each Cafe champion was asked to express a preference for their Café Connect topic. The Café coordinator then matched each community's preference to a speaker and topic, as closely as practically possible.

Q. Who are the speakers?
The speakers are a mix of dot.rural Co-Investigators, Research Fellows, Postgraduate Researchers and Associate Investigators. Reflecting the diverse research taking place at dot.rural, they have backgrounds in Ecology, Communications Engineering, Transport research, Computing Science, Sociology and Healthcare.

Q. What happens after this pilot?
The series is a precursor to a phase II concept where the infrastructure of dot.rural may be used to develop streaming and communications methodologies to link the rural Cafés and reach communities past the core group, across the UK.

10 communities. 10 Café Sci style public talks. 10 researchers. 10 days.

Café Connect is an initiative delivering free public science talks in remote or rural communities across Scotland. It strives to take the well-established Café Scientifique format – where scientists deliver free, informal talks to public audiences in non-scientific venues – to a wider audience.

The aim is to nurture community science events, in informal, varied and interactive settings, through the empowerment of local champions and community organisations.
